Fiction Critique 2: The
Continuity of Parks
21 January 2013
I’ve only ever read a piece like this, that looks back
onto itself from the beginning, twice before but in all instances I have loved
this form of writing thought it was not until now that I discovered what type
of writing this was. I hope that one day I can write a story of this kind that
doesn’t seem forced or awkward. This story is brilliant! I love how Cortazar
was able to make the characters literally come to life in such a subtle way. I would
never have imagined the story ending at the beginning much less, hoping for it
to continue. The illusion that is created here is that the old man, the author,
has written himself into the story when in reality (I believe) that he is just
attempting to portray how much the story means to him and how immersed in its
world he actually is. It echoes his “perverse pleasure of disengaging himself
line by line from all that surrounds him.”
