Incident Report
Martin 'n Phil be playin sum football. Martin be playing fo'
da yella team an Phillip be on dat blu team and they both rushed at dat ball,
Martin’s team had the ball and he wanted to score an Philip wanted to jack the
ball from Martin. They both tried snatching that ball out the air but Martin
gave Philip that burn. Philip tried to bring that man down but Martin swung and
gave Philip that neck. Martin popped him
on the real. It couldn’t been no accident. Martin had beef with Phillip and
wanted to lay that man out.
That’s not entirely true. Yes, Martin and Phillip were never
really good friends, but they were playing a game of football together: Martin
was on the yellow team and Phillip was on the blue team. Martin’s team had
possession of the ball and was trying to score a touchdown. Phillip’s team was
down by two and Phillip wanted desperately to stop Martin’s team from scoring the
touchdown so he planned to stage an interception. The play began. Martin and
Phillip both lunged for the ball. Martin caught it. Phillip leapt towards
Martin who ended up elbowing him in the neck. I don’t know if it was an
accident or if it was on purpose—he didn’t look like he was aiming for anything
or anyone in particular when he elbowed—but Martin made contact with Phillip.
He elbowed him so hard that Phillip went flying, hit against the door, and went
down. Coach Trey saw it too.
Coach Trey ain’t seen shit. That boy was hiding in the shed
when the game whistle holla'd, creepin’ in that bathroom thru-out da game , and
only showed his scary face when ya boy Phil was rushed out to that hospital.
That…that…that’s not…true!
I saw everything from the overview! It looked like Coach said something
and then walked towards the locker room area and sat on one of the benches we
sit when we break from practice. He was watching everything with this sad slump
that kinda made me feel like he was tired or like he was depressed or that he
had just given up or….
Trick, ain’t nobody ask you dat. All they want to know is
about Martin and Phill.
I’m getting to that. I just wanted to let them know that
Coach was watching. But anyways, they started playing, someone on the blue team
tossed the ball, Martin and Phil went for the ball, and then next thing I know
Martin is in the touchdown area dancing and celebrating and Phil is on the
floor. It all happened so fast.
Nah! That’s bull shit. This gurl wasn’t even there. She got her
shit all jacked up. Ight, Ma’, see what had happened wuz dat mah home boys
Martin an’ Phillip was sportin’ on dat field playing some football. Mart be
playing fo' da yella team an Philly Phil be on dat blu team and they both
rushed at dat ball, ya dig? Nah see Martrooni had da bawl an’ he wuz tryna get
in da TD yaherd? And Phil wuz tryna hop up fo a pick 6. So dey goin at it
right? Mart snatches that ball mid-air and when that boy Philip tried to bring
that man down, Martin swung and gave Philip that elbow. Erybody know Phil had
charged Mart cuz Mart had slept with Philly’s gurl. Phil had snaps with that
man but he wuz too soft. Mart laid that man out on the turf in secs.
That has nothing to do with anything that was going on in the
game and therefore has no relevance in this discussion. It’s true that those
boys were always getting themselves into trouble, they always turned everything
into a competition, and they weren’t the best of friends, but what happened
here today has nothing to do with that. We have to focus on the incident at
hand. The best person to explain what happened is Coach Trey. Talk to him.
He’ll clear everything up.

Those boys don’t listen. The field was wet, they didn’t have
cleats, and it was starting to drizzle. But they didn’t listen. They never do.
They always do what they want. Now look where that’s gotten them: one in the
hospital and the other on his way to jail. The gym was open, the basketballs
and goals were set up, but they wanted to play football. I was through trying
to negotiate with them so I went to go sit under the covering and watched them
from there. Everything was fine when it started to pour and I had to run to the
shed to close it up before the water got in and ruined the equipment. I came
back and everything was still fine. I watched for another ten minutes and then
got up to go to the bathroom. When I came back I saw Phil knocked out on the
floor gasping for breath with his team screaming at Martin who was dancing in
the end zone. Next thing I know, here we are.
