Student Critique/ Application For Employment
3/12/2013
When I first started reading your piece I thought that it
was a good choice to use an employment application to experiment with, but I wished
that you did more experimenting. It wasn’t until I got to the ‘employment
history’ section that I realized that you were gradually building us up to the
experimental experience. I personally thought that from the ‘employment history’
section onward your work was really good. I wish that you had begun your piece
like that because I feel that a piece like this will lose people’s attention if
it looks too common. But, the voice that you created in your piece was very
memorable. At first I questioned how someone whose sole aspiration (or so it
seemed to me) was to be a barista wouldn’t be capable of wielding words such as
‘mediocre’ or putting together a coherent statement such as the one found in
response to the question “what is the best job you’ve ever had? Why?” But, it
all became clear when I learned about her history. You did a good job hiding from
us what happened and I think that is what really made the piece stand out; the
backstory behind this desperate application, the application for acceptance into
something, anything, was excellent. Thank you for sharing your piece with us.
